Joana Amaral is currently an Adjunct Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança and integrated member of Centro de Investigação de Montanha, which is classified as Excellence center. She has a degree and a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences. As a result of her scientific activity, she is author/co-author of 86 Scopus articles (with h-index 32, SCOPUS 2022), 14 book chapters, more than 100 communications in congresses, and Editor of 6 books/abstract books . She is Section Editor-in-Chief of journal Foods (ISSN 2304-8158, IF 4.009), Advisory board member of Challenges, and guest editor of 6 Special Issues (in Foods and Food Research International journals). She is/was principal researcher of 6 national (2 FCT funding and 4 with other national funds) and 1 international (FCT Bilateral cooperation) financed projects, and participates as member in over other 25 projects, including 4 H2020-BBI projects, 1 PRIMA, 1 COST action and the European Project FOODINTEGRITY - Ensuring the Integrity of the European food chain (FP7-KBBE-2013-single-stage, No 613688) (2016-2018). She is/was co-supervisor of 4 PhD students, over 30 MSc students and several graduate students. She has experience as international expert evaluator for the Agencia Nacional de Promoción Científica y Tecnológica (ANPCyT) de Argentina, University of Bozen-Bolzano and University of Parma, Italy, for the European Comission as Project Evaluator (H2020-SFS, European Comission 2017-2018, 2019) and as Expert Monitor (European Comission Project H2020-SFS-2016-2-727864) and national projects evaluator for ANI (National Agency for Innovation). She also assisted REA (EU Research Executive Agency) in different evaluations. She was the President of the Food Chemistry Division of the Portuguese Society of Chemistry (SPQ) from 2009-2012, National Delegate at the Food Chemistry Division (FCD) of the European Chemical Society (EuChemS) since 2011, was elected Secretary of FCD-EuChemS for the term 2018-2020 and was elected Chair of FCD-EuChemS for the term 2021-2023. She is reviewer for several different journals in the Food, Analytical chemistry and Biosciences area and was juri member of different PhD and MSc thesis. She was member of several Organizing and Scientific committees of national and international conferences. Se collaborates in several outreach activities such as the national Chemistry Olympics and Open Science days. Her research interests are related to food products and medicinal plants authentication, plant food supplements authenticity, nutraceutical and bioactive compounds in foods and particularly in wild edible plants, extraction of bioactive from food by-products and natural products, essential oils characterization and bioactivity of natural products (mainly antioxidant and antimicrobial activity).
